Getting step tracker to ignore bicycling?

Does anyone here have a good way to get the step tracker to not count "steps" while I'm bicycling? Apparently the motion from bicycling is enough like walking that my iPhone's step tracker triggers in the MFP app, but the count is tremendously inaccurate (and I have a dedicated app to measure my bicycling anyway).
I tried turning off step tracking before I got on the bicycle, but doing so reset my earlier calories burned from walking to zero. I walk a lot, but I bike a lot too (not owning a car is my best exercise tool!), so I'd like to be able to count both of them accurately. Thanks!
