i haven't the slightest clue how often to do my weight lifting or how many days to rest between sessions. any advice? i prefer upper body/lower body splits as opposed to whole body or ppl, but i can switch if it's better for muscle building.

Generally you should be taking around 2-3 days per week for rest and active recovery especially for beginners. Still there are other factors to consider when it comes to determining your adequate rest such as age, fitness levels, workout intensity, and injuries.1

The general guidelines are 2-3 days rest per muscle group, with the higher end of that range being for larger muscles like the quads, and at least 10-15 hard-working sets per muscle group per week. How you structure a schedule for that is a personal choice, based on your schedule, age and energy levels, volume and intensity per workout, etc.
For example you might do UrLrU in week 1 and LrUrL in week 2. Or, ULrUL each week. Etc.0
