What will I gain from lifting weights?

Now I know it's impossible to predict the affects of lifting on individuals but I'm about to buy myself a set of dumbbells to use at home. My main aim at the moment is to lose body fat! What will weight lifting do for me in general? Does it boost fat loss? Will I build muscle mass (which I wouldnt mind!), will I gain strength? What are the benefits? And will I see any benefits?

^This.
It's dependent upon the weight you'll get.
You might build a little noob muscle, but probably not a lot, you'll build strength if the weight you get can tax the muscles enough.
Mainly, you're working on maintaining the muscle mass you already have (plus adding strength), so when you lose the fat covering the muscles they will still be there. That's where definition comes from.0
