Steps vs. calories

Hey everyone! I’m sure this has been asked and answered before but I can’t find any info. I’m wondering why my steps are giving me such a low calorie burn on here? Today I’ve done 12,000 steps and it’s saying I’ve only burnt 40 calories. I have an Apple Watch as my tracker. TIA!

Two possibilities:
- you only get extra calories for activity above your selected activity level, so choosing active, for example, will require more steps to get extra calories than if you choose sedentary
- Apple doesn't 'play well' with MFP, so it might just be that Apple doesn't send over the right numbers to MFP to get proper credit for your activity0
