Factory Reset on an old Android phone?

What is the point in setting your Android phone back to factory settings if all anyone got to do is look on youtube video to see how to restore the phone & data & all your information? I will never sell another used device of mine on count of this. I am afraid someone can restore the device's data & get my information. I sold an old cell phone once after i took it to my service provider to erase all data out of my phone & remove my sim card, but i won't do it again. Does anyone know about setting the Android phone to factory settings & how easy it would be to restore it? What about an Ipad or Ipod device? Is it better to destroy the device instead of selling it or giving it to someone?
