Women: What size is midsized?

In US clothing a lot of people are saying anything from a size 8 (medium) to a size 16 (XL) is mid sized. On social media lately many plus sized women (size 16+) are saying mid sized is plus sized and that we should stop using the term mid sized but they include size 8.
So my main questions are is size 8 plus size? What's mid sized to you?

Wow, if size 8 is plus size, that changes a whole lot of peoples' thinking.
I think, IMO, mid sized is 10-14.
Out of curiosity, I'm wondering what the 'average' size is?0 -
Size 6-12 or 14 is midsize in my mind. Then again, women’s sizing is arbitrary1

As someone who has teetered between plus sized and non-plus sized clothing for most of her life, I feel like US sizes 14 and 16 are in a gray area. Why? Because one can find a 14W in most plus sized sections but a 16 in more standard size sections. Some plus sized sections will carry 14s, and some standard size sections don't carry up to 16. Stores that cater to plus size will carry a small as a size 10 in some cases (Torrid) but in others, down to a 14. I would call size 8-14 solidly midsize, but considering the US average dress size is 16, which can be found in the standard size section, I wouldn't question if someone included it. That said, I have never seen a size 18 out of the plus section, so it's definitely not midsize.
I would also argue a different measurement matters- height. A petite 14 and an extra long 14 cater to completely different body types, and I would disagree with the notion that a 6 foot tall, size 14 woman is plus sized, as opposed to healthy. I'm a size 14 at 5'10 and only 16 pounds overweight, after all.2 -

Are you by any chance getting this information from pro ana websites?1 -
I guess a shorter way to summarize my thoughts would be as follows: With average height/bust women, if the equivalent t-shirt size has an X in it (XL, XXL, 2X, etc), it's plus sized. (Obviously excluding XS and XXS). Medium-large is mid range, and XXS-S are small range.1

I agree with @twitchymcgee...its really arbitrary...I have size 6s up to size 12s thst all fit...some a tad tighter or looser ...depending on the store or even article of clothing the sizing can be off or different...ive bought 10s that were cut way smaller than my 8s...2

I can understand XS, S,M,L, XL, XXL... but I have never understood the need for the term 'Plus Size.' Plus WHAT?! We already HAVE designations for larger sizes.
As for Mid-Size? Depending on the manufacturer, I consider that to be a U.S. 10-16.

I think mid size is like 10 or 12-16 imo. I don’t think it’s super necessary to classify into groups though. 🤔 I guess all clothing stores would either have to be larger to accommodate all sizes or only have a handful of each size to accommodate the room inside of the store. As a concept I think all sizes should be available but the practicality of that isn’t exactly feasible for all companies.
Perhaps having a ship to store option for non standard sizes and I think some of the smallest sizes could stand to order online since the US standard right now is mid size.0 -
I have never even heard the term mid size. What is it supposed to denote - what a size medium means? If so there is no answer because every company is different and many try to distinguish themselves either through making roomier sizes “vanity sized” to make people feel good when they try on clothes so that they purchase them when they see they are “only a size __” and others try to make themselves more exclusive by sizing their clothes “true to size” or even smaller to signal what type of clientele they cater to (i.e thin people who look like models) and their stores never display anything above a size 4 in the show room and the company doesn’t make anything above a size 8 at all. And then there are clothes which are sized in sizes 1,2,3,4 that correspond more or less to XS,S,M,L. But regardless of even the category of company - vanity sized or exclusive sized per my denomination - every designer in each category is different, and often different cuts are very different so something meant to be “close sized” will have a different sizing scale than something that is looser fitting.
I am personally mildly obsessed with this stuff because post breast cancer surgery I am oddly shaped so fit no standard sizing. And now, post weight loss I am 35-29-35 I still have the rib cage though not the breasts of a larger woman, and my waist and hips are more or less flat and boyish looking not hourglass shaped at all. I am 5’8” weight 133 and usually wear a size S or a 4 but sometimes its an xs or a m and sometimes its even a l depending on the clothing and the designer. So the only reason I care about this stuff is because it wastes my time trying to purchase clothing and having to return it (even when I use the measurement guides and even when i read the customer comments). I will buy any size that fits me and if you want to call me a plus size or some other crazy thing have at it - just give me good clothes that fit and flatter!2
