Because you need fewer calories to maintain that weight.

What spiriteagle said. Think about it: When your body is lighter, it takes less energy to move it through the world, doing whatever you happen to do during your day. Less energy spent, need fewer calories.

    Seems unfair, doesn't it? 😉

Here's the thing: If lucky (or trying), as we get lighter, it starts to be easier and more fun to move our bodies, not just exercise (or exercise intensity), but just doing daily-type stuff. If we build on that ease/fun, we burn more calories.

Some people burn more calories when they're not obese people lumbering slowly through the world, resting often; and instead become lighter, scampering lively people who do lots of fun physical stuff instead.

Exercise is one possibility, but also stuff like this:

The way I look at it is before losing 50 lbs, I was hauling around a 50 lb bag of dog food everywhere I went. Every hike or hill I went up, I was carrying that around. Every bike ride. I worked really hard to move that extra weight around. I put down the 50 lbs, and it's so much easier to hike and walk and ride my bike! Seriously, it's so much easier! And that is why I get fewer calories. I need less energy (kcals) to do stuff.
