primarily your cardiovascular system, legs, and glutes2

Please, please, please -- not your shoulders! 99% of the people I see on the Stairmaster at the gym are putting all their weight on their shoulders. That is awful for your shoulder joints and posture!
If you can't keep up, get off the machine or slow it down to the point where you can with good posture and not having to push up with your arms.1
