Screenshot from Garmin Connect, from yesterday's open water swim. I sprained my hand pretty badly so I'm back floating and swimming snow angel style. My watch saw an average of 22k lux during the swim. You can see towards the end when a cloud blew over and told me it's time to move on with the day.
I've had long swims when my back and sometimes belly have been a little tender in the shower, now I know why. I was thinking the water basically "blocked" light but it doesn't, it bends it. A lot of sunlight reaches the first/top couple feet of the water column.
