The loose/lose switching is so prevalent that when I read someone using lose properly, I think they misspelled it.

I hate they're, their, and there.......

    They're - They are
    Their - ownership
    There - place

Not everyone is a Native english speaker. Can you get the gist of their meaning? Why let it bother you?

When ever I type I change 'definitely' to 'for sure' because it always looks like it's spelled wrong to me.

I used to be a stickler for good spelling also. However, as the mom of 2 highly intelligent dyslexics, I now realize that understanding what words mean, and using them correctly in conversation is far more important then being able to spell them correctly.

    Just my thoughts.

This is a health-, fitness- and nutrition sight and we talk about it daily and I am astounded how many people use " protien " and not protein.
In general I think people spell English a lot worse than they did on average 10-15 years ago.

Haha. I teach French and I just think if I can use French grammar correctly as well as English, then there's no excuse!

People making mistakes with you're and your, to and too, we're and were etc really annoy me! I have to hold myself back from commenting on them on Facebook!

I'm pretty good with the basic ones like lose, loose, loss and two, too, to, and their, they're, there, and your and you're, but I do have a grammar question if anyone can answer.

How do you refer to singular person of unknown gender in conversation? I incorrectly use the work "they" which I know to be plural, but when you are talking about neither a he or she, and it is rude to say "it" about someone's baby or another person, what do you say?

    Example:

"I know that the baby is going to be so cute. I hope they like to read when they grow up"

What should I have said instead? I hope the baby likes to read when the baby grows up? I don't like constantly saying he/she, but maybe that is the only way?

Also, there is a man at my work who is in a position that requires him to present to the whole building on a regular basis who never uses "were" only "was"

We was going to the park.
    They was eating breakfast.
The men and women was being safe.

It makes me want to correct him every time!

We non-native speakers of English usually do a lot better , because to get to a certain level of competency we really have to study hard ( I know that I did ) and therefore most of us do not make that kind of mistake. Many others yes, but that one....no.
