Is it better to do more reps with a comfortable amount of weight, or less reps at a more challenging weight?

Progressive overload can be achieved either way, which is how you get stronger/fitter. However you should be getting to a point pretty quickly with existing weights that the number of reps you need to do to continue to progress becomes tedious and painful to complete. Who wants to do 3 sets of 40 reps of bicep curls, right? Life is too short. So best way, from what I understand, is pick a weight you can do around 6-8 reps of. Once you can do about 12 reps with that weight, up the weight and start again with the new weight.1

Depends on your goals. 3-5 reps for strength, 8-12 reps for hypertrophy.1

There's many ways to approach it but it really comes down to what you're trying to accomplish and where you're at within your training program.
If you're willing to give a few more details about your goals and program then I'm sure we could help you out.1 -
You need to explain what "better" means to you, people train for different goals and your exercise should align with those goals.1
