High sodium can mask weight loss by making your body retain water, but I don't know of any way it impede weight loss.

High sodium intake, especially if you're not sweating it all out can cause water retention which obviously shows up on a scale. Sodium has nothing to do with fat loss.

Generally speaking, if your sodium consumption is relatively consistent it really shouldn't matter. Where you typically see a jump or stall in weight loss is when someone reduces sodium and then has an unusually high sodium day and then they see the scale number jump up a bit the next day.

I can jump a good 4lbs over night after a very salty day, but it's not impeding my fat loss, just covering it up. It will go and I'll generally see a big drop in the days following.

It can freak you out to see it on the scale though, but I know my "tells" - I can literally tell by how tight my rings are whether I'm retaining more fluid than usual, and then I know not to take what the scale says to heart.
