How to log potluck food?

Eating home-cooked potluck meals with family is hard - I don't know what any of the recipes are, and I don't have a great way of tracking portions ... in the past I wouldn't even have bothered trying to log it, but I've promised myself I'll track every day. Any suggestions for how to speed up the estimation time, or at least make the fudging more accurate? Thanks!

I sometimes I guess and log it under quick calories, or I pick apart the food I ate to log it in. It's a hassle.

I de-construct the ingredients and log the best that I can.

Same here. If you have a phone with a note/reminder section, add everything you eat to it.
Also, carry a bottle of water with you at all times. Having it in your hand makes you less likely to randomly pick up food and eat it. Aslo, drinking a lot of water will make you less hungry.
