Bodybuilding

I came on here three years ago to lose weight! Lost about 80 pounds and kept it off. I fell in love with fitness during and I’m on my way to bodybuilding. I’ve been tracking my macros and they seem off. How many grams of protein would you recommend per kilo/pound?

1 gram per lean body weight.

Thank you! For some reason MFP is telling me I need around 200 grams when I’m 116 pounds. I’m like there’s no way my body can absorb all that.

Examine.com used to have a nice research-based calculator, but it's not free anymore. Sigh!

You'll get varying rule of thumb recommendations. Personally, I think 0.8g to 1g protein daily per pound of lean body mass is OK, which for many people is roughly equivalent to 0.6-0.8g per pound of healthy goal weight. Some people will make that 0.8-1g per pound of goal weight.

There are bodybuilding sites that recommend more, and excess protein within reason won't hurt a healthy person, but most of the sources I thought were level-headed don't exceed 1g per pound of goal weight. But that's just my opinion, so 🤷‍♀️.

Protein quality - i.e., essential amino acid (EAA) completeness - matters, too, as a totality across one's short-term protein sources.

Thank you guys so much! That’s what I figured after a whole bunch of research! MFP is just funny.

It wouldn't have given you that recommendation unless you tinkered with your macros in the settings/goals, and/or it will adjust both calories and macros for exercise...
