Did you do the guided set-up on this site? What calorie goal did that give you?

Unless you’re involved in intense training don’t worry about calories out for now. Use the calculators to find your calorie target to maintain at your current weight. Get a food scale and use it for everything except liquids. Start a food diary and try to hit the number the calculator gives you. Try a test for about 3 weeks. Have you tracked all of your intake? Have you gained, lost or stayed the same? That’s 3 weeks. Not 3 days. And not jumping on and off the scale. That should give you some idea of what your number is.

Don’t get carried away with the fitness gadgets. The calculators and gadgets are based on averages and statistics. But no one is exactly average. We really don’t know how many calories we are using unless hooked up in a lab. In the end we are all working on our individual programs and learning mostly from trial and error. A problem inherent in trial and error is we have to be willing to work through the errors. It takes a lot of persistence to lose a significant amount. Weight loss is mostly about problem solving and persistence.

Regardless of what number you start with, if you aren’t losing over the course of a couple of weeks, the thing to do is cut some calories and keep going. Eventually you will hit a number that results in losses. When you find your number the next issue is living with it. Which is where the real work is. When you find the place where you are on a downward trend, ride the trend as far as it will take you. If you find you can regularly losing even 1/2 lb per week, don’t mess with success. That voice in your head telling you to go faster is not your friend. When you stop losing, adjust your calories down and keep going. Fact is the adjusting never ends. Even at goal weight. There is no finish line. Good luck.
