why does mfp only put me in a 400 cal deficit rather than a 500 when i want to lose 2 pounds per week

The most likely reason that you would get a smaller deficit than you ask, is when the deficit you want would give you a calorie goal that would be too low. For women 1200 is the lowest calorie goal, 1500 for men.1
