Getting fit for snowboarding season! Advice?

Hey everyone,

Well sadly it looks like the summer will be closing in on us soon (at least in the northern hemisphere!), but the good news for us winter sports goers is the new season is just around the corner :)

I had so much fun snowboarding last season, and as a fantasic bonus I burned a ton of calories. However, in order to make sure that I enjoy this season even more, I want to be fighting fit for it so that I get less injuries and don't have any annoying aches and pains throughout the day.

My main issue seems to be my ankles...I've always had pretty weak, crappy ankles and after a full day boarding they kill me! I always make sure that my bindings are on tight, I have thick socks on and my boots are nice and secure...so it's not my equipment. Does anyone have any suggestions of what I could do to strengthen them?

Also any other exercises I could be doing now to make sure that I get the most of my day when I'm up there? I think that I need to be more flexible and supple to avoid injury and start getting brave enough to try a few jumps :)

I know when I get on my board the first few times my thighs have a hard time adjusting =) After the first time going down I'm ready to quit =) As the season advances, it just gets easier... and not as tiring...

I don't really prepare - I look forward to seeing what others will offer!

The best thing I have done for my ankles is running barefoot. For general strength Stronglifts 5x5 and for flexibility I have recently been doing some yoga.

Have a fun season on the slopes!
