Hi!
Unfortunately, central London is not really a moderately priced kind of place! Can't really recommend anywhere (since I live here haha) to stay but I definitely think it would be worth your while to look for something not too close to town. Have a look at the tube map www.tfl.gov.uk and staying in zone 2 shouldn't be more than about 10-15mins on the train to central areas.

A good place to look is laterooms.com - they do good deals and you will have lots of choice of areas to stay x0

It is also worth looking at some of the universities as they let out some of their student accommodation during the summer holidays.
