Hip Pain with Fibro

Hi All!! I love this site. I have just started a few weeks ago and love it here! It is so helpful to me to track my food and excercise. It is keeping me motivated. I have been trying to excercise at least 30 mins per day. On days when I do not feel great or am tired or busy I at least do 20 mins. Some days I do more than 30 mins, sometimes an hour per day!!
That said, I have fibomyalgia and was instructed by my dr. to only walk 5 mins per day. I have been doing more because I want to try to do the recommended 30 mins per day. However, I am only walking 2.0 - 3.0 mph so that I am able to walk longer. I have been doing Wii Fit, Yoga Stretching and Strength Training for 17 mins and then various other cardio like advanced dance step, hula, free step, or walking in my meighbourhood or treadmill if I can get out. This has been working for me and has avoided my muscles seizing up as it is low impact excercise.
However, since doing 30 mins on the treadmill, I have been having horrible pains in my hips. Does anyone else here have fibromyalgia and have this problem?? If so, how do you deal with it? I am also going to start a fibro swim class but would like to keep walking
Thanks

welcome,
I too have fibro and it makes it really hard to exercise. I just started a few weeks ago and have only been doing swimming and walking slowly. I hope that over time that I can work up to doing more. When I have intense pain I use pain meds, heating pads, my hot tub and massage to help relieve the pain. I would love for you to add me as a friend so we can encourage each other and motivate each other.0 -

Friend requested you. Yes, a few days, I have had to take a muscle relaxer before excercise! Doing yoga is kinda hard then he he.
The hip pain is sharp stabbing pain right through the bone. It is short lived, but consecutive stabbing feeling! The heat works for my muscle aches but don't know what to do for the deep pain. Oh well I will keep doing what I am doing and hopefully it will go away!!
Do you have Wii Fit?? I find the yoga stretching is really good for me if I do it every day. If I miss a day, I am VERY sore the next day. It burns about 75% of the calories I would walking slowly. If I go faster than 3.0 mph my muscles sieze for days.0 -
Hi!! I work in a Physical Therapy clinic, and we see a lot of Fibro patients. What I find is that the pool is your BEST option. It allows you the most range of motion, and allows the most amount of exercise without paying the price later on. I'm so happy to hear you are starting a pool class for Fibro patients. I would recommend that you do this class, and maybe try and walk on the off days, and let pain be your guide. If it hurts, stop. You will (as you know!) have good days and bad days. Don't beat yourself up if you have a bad day and can't exercise.
I would imagine that your hip pain is from doing more exercise than you have in recent memory, everyday. Your muscles are weak and need to get stronger, and if they aren't, your ligaments and joints take the brunt of the impact.
So give yourself time, see how the pool class goes, and take each day as it comes, and listen to your body!!

Hi I have fibromyalgia too feel free to add me as a friend. There are quite a few people on this site that have FM in varying degrees of severity and there is another thread about FM and exercise that I was looking at and posted on the other day. Rather than repeat myself you can find it here:

Hope this helps0 -
Well I am trying to swim recreationally as well. But at the very least I do my stretching every day even if I am in pain. I find it painful in the beginning but by the time I am done it feels better. If I don't, I will pay the next day.
Once a week I will do swim class and swimming with my family at least once or twice per week and walking when I can.
I usually I walk 2.5 mph and for 20 mins, not 30 at 3.0 mph . So I think 30 was pushing it for me! I think I will do leisure walks in my neighbourhood rather than pushing straight thru on the treadmill.
I also have grade II whiplash that never quite went away and am quite stiff on my right side, so I find the stretching is a must every day
Thanks for the info0
