Being able to STILL do physical things with my kid and neices and nephews. Watching their parents not being able to run around, climb, etc. keeps me going because I NEVER want to be in that state unless I'm dead.

I'm 48 and all I have to do is look around and the vast majority of guys I see that are my age are already degenerative on some level...for many I would think they are pushing 70 rather than 50. I remain physically capable and competent and intend to keep it that way.

Then I look at older guys...like my mom's boyfriend who has been active his whole life...he's 73 but very healthy and fit and he hikes and mountain bikes and skis and appears to be more like early 60s than mid 70s. My best friend's dad is the same age and he's never been physically active or otherwise taken care of his health...he rarely gets off the couch and can barely muster the strength to walk to the mail box.

Guess which one I'd rather be at that age?

I was close to 400 pounds last Feb and I was turning 40 in May. I knew I didn't have much time left. Now I run 5km a day 5 days a week, down 138 pounds and am in better shape than all of my friends. Everything just feels good and that's what motivates me.

I don't feel all that inspired TBH . . . that sounds kind of grand for me. I'm just trying to live a pretty happy life for as long as I can. Watching the general population of women roughly +/- ten years of my age, it became pretty obvious that staying obese and inactive wasn't going to accomplish that - kind of the reverse. (Does that count as inspiration?)

I was mid-40s when I started getting active. Back then, my inspiration (?) was getting back to feeling reasonably energetic, strong and happy after stage III breast cancer, and the better part of a year spent in treatment (surgery, chemo, radiation), which was closely followed by being diagnosed severely hypothyroid. It felt more desperate than inspired, as far as I can remember. I was 59 when I had to admit to myself, finally, that being strong and reasonably fit, while staying obese, wasn't going to give me the long-term happy-ish path that I'd prefer, so I finally committed to weight loss back in 2015, lost 50+ pounds, from class 1 obese to healthy weight.

Things are pretty good now. I'm 67, still quite active, still at a healthy weight, still just trying to live a pretty happy life according to my own tastes. Inspired? Not so sure. "Healthier habits" seem like a path to a goal - happy life - not a goal in themselves, to me.
