Lifting Heavy

I have been dancing around the idea of starting lifting heavy, but I'm not sure where or how to start. I've had personal trainers in the past, so I know some basic uses for free weights. At this time I'm not ready for a personal trainer though... I suffer from severe social anxiety and am prone to panic attacks when I'm pushed too far out of my comfort zone. Are there ways to ease into this type of exercise? Are there personal trainers out there that guide without pushing too hard? I'm highly motivated to change, it just has to be at a rate that I'm comfortable with. Suggestions? Links?
