help with macros!!

Thinking about trying the "Diabetic diet" again. I did it a few years back and lost weight pretty quickly and got pretty fit. It was due to a scare that made me wake up to the fact that I was incredibly overweight and unhealthy. Since then I have lost about 60 pounds ( I had lost 70 and had more lean muscle, but gained some back by getting relaxed on diet and exercise)I have about 40 more pounds to go for goal. I was looking at my macros (which I have never fully understood) and it says I was under in carbs for the day, but over in sugar. Just curious what the differences between sugar and carbs are. Is the sugar on here just speaking of processed sugars and not just things that convert to sugar in your blood stream?? For any that looks at my diary.... I know....My macros have always been awful. Too much processed foods. I would love to cut back on that and work to develop a healthier relationship with food in general. One day at a time...I make that change now...:)

Unless you have a specific medical reason to track sugar, I would ignore that column, or perhaps change your settings to track something else. The MFP sugar column tracks all sugars, "added" and naturally occurring, not that there is much, or really any, difference.

I personally focus on a diet rich in meats, dairy, vegetables, fruit, legumes, nuts and good oils, and I add a few treats on a daily basis. I enjoy my food, but make sure that my calories are within their limits, and I satisfy my macronutrient, micronutrient and fiber needs.

I wholeheartedly support your work to have a healthy relationship with food. It's all about moderation, self discipline, and not wasting time beating yourself up for the inevitable bad days.

Amen to this! It is 100 times more important (IMHO) to find a way that you can eat healthy which is sustainable for you for the rest of your life. Some people eat healthily and under their calorie intake and then have a massive cheat day every now and again where they enjoy other unhealthier foods. Some people have a balance of healthy foods and those that are not so healthy that they enjoy.

Personally I have a huge problem with sugar - I cant eat sugar from cakes/chocolate/sweets etc etc without going crazy and eating huge amounts, so I don't eat it. I still normally go over my sugar count by double a day, just from fruit, milk etc.

I have decided I'd rather eat slightly more calories everyday, enjoy life and loose weight slowly than eat less and loose it fast but not know how to maintain it.

Try and be balanced in what you eat and find a way that is enjoyable and sustainable for you. :)
