Support is great, but it's really all about choices.

Would you consider rather than "starting a diet," that you'd start a new lifestyle with healthy habits you will continue on into the future? I suggest this because "starting a diet" implies there's a time when you stop. What happens then? A restrictive way of eating can backfire, and if you go back to whatever you've been doing up to now when you are "done" with your diet, you'll likely be back where you started.

Slow and steady is good. Use the tools to build a good calorie budget and follow it. Be at your calorie goal on average every week, and don't give up if you have a few bad days.

Speaking as one who was going to “start Monday” times a hundred, Monday isn’t magical and my “Monday” never happened.

    If you’re ready, you’re ready.

When I wasn’t ready, I’d stick up on Saturday so I could enjoy alls many and as much of my faves before “Monday”.

I knew I was ready when I actually threw away and gave away food, and made an initial meal plan. It was a “less than informed” attempt, but it was a start.

I would generally agree with springlering62 above, but I also understand the "Last Hurrah" mindset of SuperBowl Feastiness.

One thing I had to wrap my mind around was, "How do I deal with Special Occasions?" The answer was/is, Special Occasions that I over-eat during should be "occasional." So, not every Sunday football feast. Not every Friday night Happy Hour with dinner and drinks out. Occasionally.

I still over-eat at them. I'm not giving up wings and pizza forever. They are Treat foods. I log them, look at the damage, learn from it and move on. One day every couple weeks is fine. It's the popcorn and ice cream every night after dinner that are the real problems.

    Special
    and
    Occasional

    What you said.

There's nothing wrong with a little side-hike off the main path as long as it's just a side hike and doesn't take you over to the next valley and over into a completely different watershed never to return. Enjoy it. There's neat stuff there. But then just get back on it.

The next step after that OCCASIONAL celebration (I had one just over a week ago, and I'll probably let myself a little leash for the "Big Game,") you are almost certain to see a jump on the scale. It might be a big one. Last Saturday morning it was almost five pounds. Worry not! It is not new fat. That would have been quite the celebration to go more than 15,000 calories OVER my normal budget. Just doesn't happen. It's from that celebration having a party going through the tube and maybe some water held with salt or glycogen or whatever. Very soon you'll be back on track; another reason to use a weight trend graph so that one day jump is unimportant.

Some people even use a strategy of going intentionally under for a few days BEFORE the celebration so it's even less of a "big day" when it does come. That can not only help leveling out calorie budget, but it can help you mentally accept that it's OK to do it... OCCASIONALLY.

I totally read that as ..."intentionally going over for a few days BEFORE..."

...and my inner fat girl said, "Wait, wut? That's a thing?"

    *sigh*

I don't think ANY of us need additional "training" to go over our calorie budget.

You got this, it can be a struggle, but its possible moderation, and setting small achievable goals is the way to go. Trying to lose 30 pounds overall is hard, but losing 10 pounds 3 times is a lot more manageable mentally and those little goals are nothing but pure motivation! YOU GOT THIS!
