Strength Training Questions

I joined a gym last week to start strength training. I know not to do strength 2 days in a row so my goal is to go about 3-4x a wk. How much time should I spend doing strength while I'm there? So far it's been about 45-60mins total each time, hopping from one machine to the next. Should I aim for heavier weights and less reps or lighter weights and more reps? Right now I'm just kinda winging it. Also, with my HRM it says I usually burn 170ish cals... But I've read strength boosts your metabolism so you need to eat more... So is eating what I burn enough or should I eat more? Also, can I do strength and cardio on the same day? I think I need a strength training for dummies book lol
