Can you give some context? Your question isn't clear.

    Easy ...

A portion is not any measure at all. It's just a term to denote a part of something. ..an amount, or a section of something. Like ... "I always save a portion of the sourdough starter I use to make a bread dough to be placed aside for the next loaf." ... Or ... "New York State is a portion of the USA." ... or ... "always tithe a portion of your earnings to your favorite charity." ... Not super informative s to the actual amount

That .03, if the decimal point is in the correct spot means ... 3% ... So ... divide something into 100 and then put 3 of those tiny pieces aside ... Like 3 pennies out of a 100 of them (a dollar's worth) ... However ... it could be that the person typing that meant to say 1/3rd of something ... and then that would be .33 instead of .03. ...

    Does this help?

PS ... but here's another statement that might make sense with the decimal number and a portion ... like, say you have a 8" pie from the grocery and you want to eat 1 portion of it ... that would be one slice. Now .. how many slices did you cut that pie into? If you cut it into 8 pieces, then one portion would be a 12.5% of the total pie .. and that would look like .125 written as a decimal placement .. if you could cut just a tiny sliver of that pie, it might be close a single swallow bite of pie. .. Or .. you could say ... "I had one portion of an 8" pie" ... and not reveal how much you ate! Cause, in my case .. it would be about 1/4 of that pie if it was a flavor I liked a lot.

If you're looking at my recipes-- I will make the same recipe over and over but with variations. If I put nuts in it last time, but not this time, but I don't want to take it out of the recipe, I would like to put 0 portions. MFP won't let me use 0 portions, but it will let me use .001 portions. Effectively the same thing.

How much is a portion? Whatever you designate. 1 hamburger, 2 slices of bacon, 1/2 grapefruit, 6 Oz watermelon, 100 grams onion, etc. As nsk said, if you're looking at someone else's info, it may be a secret.
