Hi all! I’m new here and test driving MFP and Lose It. In your opinion, is MFP premium worth it, or do you stick with the free version? Thanks!

I'd suggest sticking with the free version to start, at least until you can understand the things that are on the list of premium features. The one thing people seem concerned about recently is that bar code scanning is premium only, so in free MFP you have to search foods by typing them in. (I don't find that burdensome, and scanning is unhelpful in my personal situation anyway).

Beyond that, there's more guidance in premium about eating plans or exercise plans, but IMO it's not magically essential. There's some free info that might let you evaluate its nature, or you could go for the premium free trial. The other things in premium IMO are more fine-tunings for people who want more control over nutrient goals, differences in calories by day of week, support for specialized eating plans (like keto/low carb), etc.

Got it, thanks so much for your insights! Most of my foods are fresh and barcode-free, so that’s not a big selling point for me either

I've been on MFP since before the paid version.

I did have Premium during a promotion period and found it to not be of use in any way for me, but then free is always better in my opinion.

I get on just fine with the free version although weirdly the barcode scanner still works for me.
The ads are kinda annoying but not enough to make me reach into my pocket.

I started a new profile a couple of weeks ago, after not using MFP for a while. I used MFP for years. In my hiatus I did try Lose It, but I didn't stick with it. I think I prefer MFP (over Lose It) primarily because I'm familiar with this one, so that itself is not helpful I realize.

I do have the scanner, and I use it. The most annoying feature (IMO) of the free MFP is that each time I open the app it asks me to buy the premium. I can log/prelog meals, use the recipe builder, access the community feature. Those are the things I do most often with MFP. I know for Loseit you cannot log tomorrow's food unless you have the paid version. That is a problem for me as I like being able to log tomorrow's food today sometimes.
