Different tactics work for different people.
Food logging was perfect, for me. I'd been overweight/obese for around 30 years, despite mostly eating healthy foods (too much of them!) and being very active athletically in the last 12ish years of that. When I started logging, I reached a healthy weight in a bit less than a year, and have stayed at a healthy weight for 7+ years since.
What I like about it is that I can eat every delicious calorie I've earned, without worry, knowing that I can keep my body weight in the healthy zone (and the same jeans size). I can also dial in good nutrition, and know how many calories are available afterward to fit in some treats. I can go for maximum food enjoyment within my goals now, while still giving future Ann better odds of a happy, healthy life. (Past Ann, who got and stayed fat, has some things to answer for!)
Some people find logging burdensome. I don't. There's a learning curve, so it does take more time and mindshare at first, until a person figures out how to best use the app's features (recent/frequent foods, meals, recipes, etc.). Now, it would be a rare day that it takes me even 10 minutes to log. To me, that's a small price to pay for feeling this much better, being this much healthier. (Used to have high blood pressure, high cholesterol/triglycerides, frequent joint discomfort/pain. Now my BP & blood lipids are solidly normal and joint pain (from arthritis and torn meniscus) are rare.0
Some people find that logging makes them obsessive. I don't. It makes me more relaxed, because I know where I stand.
Give it a fair trial, to get past the phase where it seems clunky or difficult because it's new and different. Then decide whether it's the right approach for you, or not.
Wishing you success, because the results are waaaay worth it, IME!0
