Anyone use online vs local gym trainer?

I have never used a trainer/coach online. This may be an odd question but I am considering as a 1 on 1.
Anyone care to share preferences and why? What to look for and not?

I have a Coach and I see him both in person and for online sessions (we video chat whilst he trains me). In person is better for technique (for me personally) as he can see 360 around me. But online for 121 works fine, I just set my phone up on a tripod and ensure he can see me. It’s a good alternative when I can’t get down to his location. He also programmes my sessions for the rest of the week and we communicate by updating the spreadsheet or I send him videos if I need him to check my technique.

Online means I can make faces at him off camera if he makes me do an exercise I dislike (he knows I do it) 🤣

Online gives me the time and space I need to warm up and down without being hurried in a gym, but it means I have to be focused and not waffle around. I suggest you try both and see what you prefer - as with all PTs or Coaches - finding one you trust and want to work with is key 👍

Ps one further thought - if you’re paying for a 121 session even if online, the trainer needs to be focused on YOU. I’ve heard of some training others or getting distracted. You’re still paying them and they should be 100% focused on you.

I like the idea of online training. I'm wondering if it would work better with an ipad on a tripod, where you can see the screen even at a slight distance. Then, I wonder if you could take the ipad/tripod to a gym (e.g., the gym at my apartment complex) and use the equipment there under supervision. You could use headphones, so only you can hear the coach.

Maybe @claireychn074 could comment. Would it be too weird with other people around? Even if the gym is sparsely used?

I have to use the gym and my schedule keeps me from being able to train when its empty or close to it.

It’s a good question and I think it does depend on the people in your gym. I’ve done it, using headphones, and just warned the people around me, but I have to admit it wasn’t very busy. An iPad on a tripod would defo be easier to see, I end up getting up close to my phone and peering at my Coach as he demos moves. But then I do Oly Weightlifting so people think I’m weird anyway! If your gym is sparsely used then I think it would work - I get a lot of benefit from the online sessions.
