Thinking of cable machine but are 5kg weights too big a step

Hi

Thinking of getting a compact cable machine to start working out. It goes up to 70kg in 5kg intervals. Is this OK? Was thinking when you do a move and need to progress to next weight, is 5k too big. Step or is it fine?

It should be fine. You can get fractional weight plates like this below, which you should be able to place at the top of your weight stack in the cable machine. That may help with some exercises where 5kg is too much.

You can also employ a dynamic double progression model. That way you won't feel a drastic jump by doing all sets one workout at some weight, then thinking you need to be at that weight+5 for every set in the next workout. The DDP method lets you move up in weight one set at a time.

Just playing devil's advocate, but are you sure it measures in kg, not lb? I ask because my gym has multiple cable machines, some measured in one, some the other, and you have to be really careful keeping track which is which. If the increases are measured in lb's, then 5 at a time is easily doable.

5kg can be too big a jump for some exercises especially if you’re working in the lighter weight category. If the machine allows, get a 5lb bumper weight.
