Athletes underfueling

I am in a circle of athletes I only know slightly, have been for years, and I'm truly stunned by the number of (almost always) women who, as soon as they have an injury that needs serious time off, immediately are trying to find out how to keep the weight off. So backwards because most serious injuries need one to eat calories to heal! I enjoy eating more because I'm active, but I am saddened by those who absolutely can't imagine gaining a few pounds to be healthier, or at least to give their body a chance to heal. <Crawling off soapbox now>

I am curious about the science behind the claim that injuries required extra calories to heal? Got any links about that? I am not being sarcastic - truly interested if there’s some sources to back it.

This is an article from Sanford Health, so not a research study, but interesting information about calorie usage during healing. Basically, they say it depends on the severity of the injury.
