Plateau

For my gender height and weight my recommended caloric intake is 2100 according to the app. I have been sticking to that and exercising. Initially I lost 16 pounds in the first month, but now I’ve been in a 10 day plateau. Any thoughts?

    Stay the course. That 16 pounds is double the safe recommended weight loss and a large loss like that is usually because of lowered carbs/food in the system, water weight, and or being extremely over-weight. Don't expect a loss every week. Good job so far!

    Weight loss is not a steady downward line, there are lots of reasons why the scale doesn't move at all for days at a time.

    16 pounds in a month is really fast, so don't expect that to continue. Give it a couple more weeks and see if you lose any more weight. Aim for about 1 pound per week (or a total of 4 pounds per month). And expect that some weeks, the scale won't go down, and other weeks, it may go down by 2 pounds. Depends on your body. If you don't end up losing any more weight, you'll need to lower your calories a little bit more.

    10 days is water if you had been losing up to that point. Wait another 3-4 weeks you’ll most likely start seeing loss again. Your homeostatic system tries to balance out fat loss with water retention and it can take time for it to be evacuated. You’ll notice a day or 2 when you pee a lot. This is the whoosh effect.

    I think that most people plateau somewhere in the first month. Initially, glycogen stores go down, which also makes you loose water. This is often 5 - 8 lbs of weight. It is more dramatic on low-carb diets, but you can see it on just about any diet. After a couple weeks, your body tends to re-adjust, store some more glycogen, and gain back the water weigh with it. A 10 day plateau is not a big issue. If you keep doing what caused you to loose weight the first month, you will start loosing again.

    Just stay the course :) I've had several plateaus. They suck at the time. But going off the diet means going back to where you were and that's not better. Stay the course and you'll slowly head toward a healthier future.
