Introduction

Hello

I am 68 years old and retired. I have a lot of weight to lose but it is important I do so because of my health and in particular my joints. My knees and feet have osteoarthritis and my weight is making it worse and limiting my mobility.

I have had quite a few health challenges in my life, the more problematic being ulcerative colitis for which I had to take prednisone many times. Prednisone is guaranteed to make you gain weight. I have gained and lost many many pounds many times. I am now on a biological medication called Entyvio which means no prednisone. Yay! I am in remission.

The past few years have been hard as I had two cancer scares and major surgeries. Luckily no cancer either time.

I really want to improve my strength and mobility.

Hi! I’m 64 and have been on prednisone for a couple of years, too. It’s awfully hard to even care about weight when I’m taking it. Off for the moment, anyway. I’m glad you’re over the cancer scares and the surgeries. I need to lose at least 50 pounds. I’m pretty sedentary and really need to start exercising. Hope we can encourage each other!

    Hi @garnettwhite welcome to MFP!

My husband is T2 diabetic, and joined me on MFP when he was 67.

He’s lost a couple of clothing sizes, been able to come off diabetes meds, but most importantly, he not only got his mobility back, but will now go walk the dog with me at the drop of a hat, without even thinking about it. He also does tai chi twice a week, and aquafit classes every day they offer it at the gym.

He actually gets bent if he can’t go to the gym for some reason. 😮

This is a total about face from his behavior a couple years ago.

Instead of fearing his decline, I feel like I’m rejoicing in his rebirth, and am confident I’ll have him at my side for more years as a result.

You can do this, but do it slowly and put some thought and effort into it. Get a scale, weigh, log religiously, and most of all, get off your hiney!

…..and I’d also like to add, after losing a considerable amount of weight, and adding varied exercise to my daily activity, I’ve been able to control it at least stave off my own arthritis from worsening. I’ve also learned, if I get up and move, that movement is more effective than any medication could ever be.

My own digestive issue (GERD) also disappeared with weight loss.

As my doctor had told me for years that it would. 😖
