Hi
I've been on mfp since December and have just about managed to lose 1 stone
I'm on 1400 calories a day drinking 2 litres a day no exercise as no time
Sometimes i gain some weight back on Sometimes i lose a pound or 2 must mostly stays at the 1 stone loss
Why does the app say if you continue to eat like today you will weigh x amount in 5 weeks! No i haven't!

It's just a way to give you an idea on what you could weigh if you ate everyday going forward like you had that day. For instance, if I have a mega good day. It will say that if I ate like I did today in 5 weeks I could weight xyz. I too started in November and so far it's been pretty good and a good way to keep me motivated. If I have a rubbish day I don't bother using the 'complete' bit.0

Because it's an overly simplistic algorithm that assumes everyday will be 100% exactly the same...which is of course impossible.0 -
Are you closing out your diary to get that estimate? You don't need to do that. I never have, and I've never seen a message like that.0

As other posters have said, the calculation done when you hit the "complete" button doesn't take into account each person's individual circumstances, so it's unlikely to be totally accurate. It makes assumptions about the base number of calories your body burns each day and then does calculations based on your food inputs.
To approach your question from another angle, if part of your question is why you aren't seeing the predicted weight loss over time, and your goal is to continue losing weight, it may be helpful to talk to your doctor. Assuming your tracking is fairly accurate (I know from personal experience that poor portion estimation and cooking oil and little snacks that go unlogged can add up fast), most people with weight to lose would be expected to lose weight on 1400 calories a day unless there is some other factor at play.0
