Hi All, I'm Jen 46 and I need to get myself in better shape. Everything I eat is bad for me but affordable - looking for a way to be healthy and happy on a buget

    Nothing wrong with frozen vegetables.

I buy meats in bulk when they’re cheap. After you’ve done it for a few weeks, you’re just cycling and not spending extra while reaping the benefits of the sale prices.

For example, if I see boneless skinless chicken for $1.99 a pound or less, I buy the most they’ll allow and divide it into freezer bags. There are low cal cuts of pork tenderloin and beef top round roast that are cheaper than other cuts, much lower calories, and still taste delicious. Smoking, crockpot or instant type pressure cooker also make them very tender. I got alllll the clearance tenderloin Kroger had a couple of weeks ago at $1.50 a pound. Nothing wrong with it and it was still in date. I guess they just overstocked.

If you haven’t discovered Lidl (love!!!) Aldi or Food Depot, check locally. My daughter goes to Grocery Outlet in SoCal. They have some good deals but you have to know local prices. I’ve learned food that comes from low-ambience groceries tastes just as good as those from the high end stores. (Looking at you, Whole Foods). Btw Lidl has a massive organic section, both canned and fresh, including meats.

We go through four tubs of cottage cheese and two of Greek yogurt a week. I just got a Costco membership to buy glasses, and will see if they ever started offering fat-free options. They didn’t a couple years ago.

Skyr? Costs an arm and a leg in the store. Can easily make 8-10 servings for the cost of a gallon of skim milk, and a little bit of dishwashing.
