Frustrated and Needs Encouragement

I'm 61 years old. Went to the gym 4-5 times a week for 4 months. Worked with weights and cardio. No weight loss. Got so frustrated I quit going. If I could just see some loss it would keep me going. Yes I had my thyroid checked all good. I do not like sweets so that not the problem. I don't drink. A glass of red wine once in awhile. Breads maybe twice a week if that. Meals consists of proteins and vegetable. Good carbs like beans and whole grains but at a minimum. Lemon, cucumber water is my drink of choice. And yes I journal my food. I just don't know what else to do. My metabolism must of left my body and went into some 20 year olds. Any suggestions or anything to go on. I'm starting back at the gym today.

  • You and I both are starting over. I started MFP in February, and for 3-4 months, I was consistently going to the gym. Probably went 4-5 times a week (when I'd open at work, I'd go right afterward. And when I'd close, I'd go in the morning). However, despite slow progress, I had progress and was almost at a 20 pound weight loss mark. Then I got super lazy over the summer & backslid & gained a lot of it back :'(

Honestly, based off of your activity level, you might not be eating enough food. You can look all over the forums about this, but the more you exercise, the more calories your body needs. Like a car, if you put a lot of driving time on it but you don't put enough gas in it, it'll obviously not run. Same with your body. Your body might be holding onto the calories/fats/carbs/whatever because it's freaking out ("starvation mode")

    Hope this helps!
  • I'm following what MFP says and that's 1200 a day. Someone else told me I wasn't eating enough but I just blew it off because it didn't make sense. What types of food should I eat then to increase my intake? Thank you for your response and help.
  • As we age our metabolisms change..it is harder to lose weight at ur age than at mine Try eating foods that will help boost ur metabolism, like for example goji berries , green tea , acai berries, coconut oil etc. See if it helps.
  • Thanks, I already use coconut oil on a regular basis. I will try the other things. Your response is appreciated.
