Questions about step tracking/exercise

Second question: I’ve read the articles and as many discussions as possible, but want to make sure I understand it and have a few questions. I have my Apple Watch and iPhone health app synced to MFP. It is successfully importing exercises and steps into MFP. I went on a walk (wearing my watch but not activating as an “Indoor Walk activity) and MFP steps increased by 4000, calories burned were credited as 55 in MFP (although my watch active calories increased by 160). I immediately went on an identical walk this time with and Apple watch activity (Indoor walk) turned on. My steps increased by 4000 and I was credited in MFP with 160 calories. Can someone explain this discrepancy? I’m still trying to understand how the steps and exercise tracker is counting the calories.
