    Hi, Dell, and welcome!

I hear you on the knee thing: I have a torn meniscus, too, but decided to defer surgery as long as possible. (I'm just conservative that way, not saying anyone else should do that!) What I didn't expect was how major a reduction I'd have in my joint pain from that (and from osteoarthritis) just from losing weight. It made a big difference.

I assume you're losing the weight to make the knee surgery safer, and presumably also to make the surgery's positive results more lasting. That should be a good plan.

I feel like being motivated is kind of a "comes from within" thing. I'm betting the desire to improve your knee situation would be pretty motivational. :)

Weight-loss wise, for myself I tried to minimize the amount of motivation (or willpower, discipline, etc.) that would be required. I'm a hedonistic aging hippie type, so I don't have a great supply of any of those things, sadly! It turned out that I could make surprising progress just by changing some of my routine habits in positive but not tooooo difficult ways.

I'm wishing you success with your weight loss efforts, because the results sure are worth it, IME!
