Introduction

Greetings Everyone!
I am 66 years young at heart. I struggle with MS and commitment to my goals. I am at 5'8" and 203. My goal is to reach 150. Ideally I should be striving for 130 but I am a bit afraid to put that out there. i recently left New Hampshire to live in Las Vegas. A big change for me! I don't know many folks here and feel a bit isolated but I have a car and a supportive partner and the limitations are more self imposed.

    Hello, and welcome!

I'm 67, and have been here on MFP for a while. I lost weight for about a year at age 59-60, have been maintaining a healthy weight since.

IMO, it's not particularly important to set a goal weight at the start. Yes, MFP does ask you what your goal is, but the value you type in has no effect on the calorie goal MFP will give you. (It uses the information to give you some progress/encouragement messages along the way.) That means you can set it to a fair guess at the start, and revise as you get closer.

I changed my goal weight several times along the way. In general, aiming for a weight we were a long time ago is iffy. Usually our body composition has changed, so that same weight will sit differently on our changed body.

When you start getting close to a reasonable goal weight for you now, you'll be able to see and (more importantly) feel it, as long as you don't have a majorly distorted body image. If in doubt, when you're getting to the right vicinity in your opinion, you can talk with your doctor. My doctor pretty much just said to aim for the normal BMI range when I asked him while I was still obese. However, I got better feedback as I got close to where I wanted to be, because he could see how my health markers were responding, and how my body fat distribution looked.

You might want to take a look at this thread:

Don't panic if you open that up and see old posts. Like any long-running thread on MFP, the newest posts are at the end, on the high-numbered pages. You can jump straight there with page-number/arrow keys near the bottom of the page. It's still active, though it tends to go in spurts then be less active for a bit.

Regardless, I'm cheering for you to succeed with your goals: In my experience, the results are very much worth it in improved quality of life!
