Can I stay on free plans and still lose weight?

Hi, I’m Azalea and 165 lbs, trying to get down to 120. I’m this much because of depressive eating, and I want to make myself better. I can’t do it on my own, I’ve tried and failed, but I don’t want to pay to lose weight either. Will this app really help me for the free?

The free version offers everything I need (I've lost 70+lbs using free MFP).
If you tell us what you expect from this app, perhaps we can be more helpful in answering the question if it's enough for your needs.
This is a general comparison:

I use the free version. It tracks your food/macros/calories, and your exercise. It's a great tool as is.
I don't think there is anything particularly miraculous about the paid version, I'm sure some people enjoy the extras but ultimately you still gotta figure out what sustainable habits work for you.0 -
Welcome to MFP @Chocolate280
I lost all my weight on the free plan- nearly 100 pounds. My husband is also on MFP, but n the free plan, too, and has lost a lot of weight.
I did eventually subscribe to premium, not so much for any particular benefit, but to support the app. I want it to be available for many years to come.0 -
I have premium now, but lost 50-some pounds back in 2015-16 with the free version, and maintained a healthy weight for several years thereafter with the free version. I'm still maintaining weight, but enjoy some of the added nutrition-management tweaks that premium allows.
There's nothing magical about premium, IMO. It does have some workout routines and eating plans that aren't in free MFP, but MFP isn't the only source of things like that. Some of the premium features are useful, and it can be worth paying if you need those specific features (or if you're the kind of person who will use something more seriously if you pay for it).
The free version certainly isn't somehow impaired in any way that will make weight loss impossible, or even (IMO) lots harder. One's internal commitment to the process, plus patient persistence, is way more important than details about the tracking tool.0 -
Thanks everyone, so glad to know I can finally start my weight loss journey here. All the love 💕
(I think if I start losing as much weight as the rest of you guys I’ll subscribe to premium, just to support.)2
