Veggie portobello burgers are better for you than chicken, low fat, high in protein, tasty and an easy lunch! I do a lettuce wrap with burger toppings.

Glad you're enjoying that, and sharing the idea!

Tasty and easy, yes, and low in calories/fat. But "better for you than chicken"? Not so sure.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a shill for Big Meat. I've been vegetarian for 49+ years.

Are you talking just using the portobello cap as a burger? If so, it's lacking in some essential amino acids. It needs other foods as complements somewhere along the way to make a complete protein (all the essential amino acids in proper proportions).

If you're talking about a commercial product or recipe with other ingredients . . . well, those vary depending on the other ingredients.

Getting good overall nutrition as a vegan or vegetarian is slightly more difficult than getting good overall nutrition as an omnivore. That's a fact, no matter how many advocacy sites or films say otherwise.

The issue isn't just protein completeness (all the essential amino acids in proper proportions) or protein bioavailability (which is lower in some plant sources). Some micronutrients also require extra attention (B-12, iron, calcium, etc.).

Plant based eating can be a great personal choice for a variety of reasons. But nutrition is important, and I wouldn't want people to slip into sub-par nutrition inadvertantly.

    Best wishes!
