Stevia?

My mom bought me a stevia plant and I don't know how to use it or what to do with it. I tasted it and it was sweet but then got really nasty, like a bitter taste. I also put a leaf in my coffee for 10 minutes and my coffee was not sweet, it just tasted like the nasty taste of the leaf.

I'm not sure how to use the fresh stevia leaf as a sweetener.

I've purchased stevia in powdered and liquid form at grocery and health food stores. I really liked them. I was told that some brands may have a bitter aftertaste (because the leaves themselves contain a compound that is bitter). All of the stevia extracts I've tried have either been not noticeably bitter or only minimally bitter.

There are a couple of variety of stevia plants. I can't tell you which is which but one tastes really good with no aftertaste - one is a bit bitter. The good one I puree in my smoothies or make a simple syrup of sorts by blending in water and storing in the fridge. Also the flavor can be effected by stuff the growers spray on plants, etc. Don't give up on stevia plants just because of a bad experience.
