Hi,
I go running 5k four times a week (takes 30 min each time) and I go walking at least 1 hour everyday.
In the weekends I bike 1,5-2h.
My question is: what do I burn with these activities. Of course running is the most exhausting, with my HR going the highest, while walking is the low-impact. Recently my boyfriend told me: ok, but do you know that you dont burn any fat when running only 30 min? The fat starts to go off after 40 min of exercise.
So what am I burning when running? Also, can other two types of activity help with burning of fat?
I am affraid to burn muscles (as I don't have them super developed yet).
Thanks for your thoughts!

You are burning calories. When you combine burning calories with limiting your daily calorie intake, you create a daily calorie deficit. When you maintain an average daily calorie deficit, you burn stored body fat.
When you exercise, you constantly burn a combination of fuels--mostly fats and carbohydrates. WHAT you burn during exercise is irrelevant.0 -

He's partially right- only that your burning m u s c l e 30 mins in. Fat is burned once you hit your target heart rate for being in the "fat burning zone" (which varies on multiple factors). Depending on how much effort you have to do to reach that zone, you can even hit that zone while walking. Do keep in mind though, fat loss isn't immediate when you hit your "fat burning zone", unless you've literally consumed nothing that day (which isn't healthy anyways); it's all about calorie deficiency. Hitting that zone amplifies the usage of calories because of the work you're doing with your body, helping to create that deficiency (just touching basics; lets not get too scientific).
Example: This is why hardcore body-builders who do cardio during a cut phase (or just want to limit fat during any phase based on personal routine) will resort to short sprints. Less muscle loss; around the same level of cardio (also subjective; this is just a ball-park explaination because this too varies).
All in all, when in doubt: google is your friend. Do what works for you and you will see results with consistency.0 -

You missed it the first time:When you exercise, you constantly burn a combination of fuels--mostly fats and carbohydrates. WHAT you burn during exercise is irrelevant.
You do not "burn muscle" after 30 min of cardio.0
