how do you know you're at 40% body fat?

if you build muscle, that will help lower the fat to lean mass ratio or you can lose weight.

At 40% body fat (or near to, since it's an estimate), it's probable that weight loss would be the most health-promoting first intervention. Gradual fat loss (small calorie deficit) is likely to be an easier path than trying to lose fast. Trying for fast loss can be a trap: Harder to stick with long enough to lose a meaningful total amount of weight, plus less helpful in learning new long-term habits.

The process isn't different based on how much body fat you have: Get your calorie intake a manageable bit below your calorie expenditure, and you'll lose fat. Set up MFP for that gradual loss, test-drive the calorie recommendation for 4-6 weeks (whole menstrual cycle(s) if you have those). Then adjust your intake if needed to dial in the sensibly moderate weight loss rate, using the assumption that 500 calories per day is a pound a week or 1100 calories per day is a kg a week (use arithmetic for fractional pounds/kg). Stick with it persistently and patiently, and you'll lose body fat.

    Best wishes!

@AnnPT77 provided some good wisdom. The key points are:
    • Be moderate in your approach; go slow.
    • Track everything so you have good data; adjust your goal after you see if results are the same as expectations.
    • Be persistent; don't quit.

you can change that number..don't let it get in your head and freak you out. Do easy things.. move more.. lift some weights...and start eating more healthy and cut out the bad food. This way .. you;'ll lose fat.. gain muscle and get your metabolism humming. You will see the change.

    The simple answer is:

    Eat less. Move more.

This website is full of info and tools. Make yourself at home, read everything, log your food. In time new habits will form, but it does take a while and for me it took many setbacks before I got on a good path. You can do it too. It's worth it. I started out obese. I've been at a healthy weight now for 16 years.
