Just about to hit 65, but am not willing to crawl under and curl up just yet. I am coming off a year of hitting the gym hard and walked 3 miles a day. Gained muscle mass, but lost zero net weight. I wasn't really measuring caloric intake. Now I am going to try to really stick to a calorie deficit and increase cardio and compound exercises.

Welcome @Zachor717
It works when you stick to it! Set an appropriate calorie target, log what you eat accurately, completely, and honestly. Log your intentional exercise and eat back your exercise calories, at least at first until you observe how your body reacts. Try to hit your target, on average, each week. Don't try to go under - your target already has a deficit built in. In a month or so, look at your results to confirm they match your expectations. If not, you can modify the goal.
Then just keep sticking to it! Don't be in a rush. It sounds like you won't be. You're already a year in to improving your fitness. Weight management is just another part of fitness.
Come on back and let everyone know how things are going.
If you have any desire to share your frustrations and celebrations with a group of folks with similar goals, you might enjoy a group I'm involved with called "Lose 1 Pound a Week and Keep it Off." It's a private group, so when you click on that link you'll have to request to join, and you'll be approved pretty quickly.
There's only two requirements. First, enter your starting weight and goals for each quarter of the year. Easy. Second, enter a weekly weigh-in. Also easy. We have some ongoing other challenges, all of which are completely optional. They can be fun. We also try to do a "special challenge" each week, although we don't always get one up. The group is run by a few volunteers, and we're off doing fun things sometimes.
Check it out if you want. Invite your friends. We're not really recruiting, but... we're kind of recruiting.

Yeah, for literally a dozen years I worked out hard 6 days most weeks, training and even competing as an athlete in a short-endurance sport (not always unsuccessfully either) . . . but stayed overweight/obese the whole time. When I got my calorie consumption in line with my activity level, I lost weight quite handily.
You're making a good choice, IMO. Hang in there: There's a learning curve, but it's worth the effort.
Best wishes!
P.S. I'm 68, if that matters. I was 59-60 during weight loss, now still maintaining. Also still active.0 -
68! Awright! I have a 92 year old friend that gets bummed out when he does less than 45 miles at a time on his road bike. I just know way too many people that just sit around all day. Thanks for the words of encouragement.1
