Supplements

What are some good supplements to take for losing weight? Or does it solely come down to looking into what nutrients you may be lacking and taking those?

For weightloss, only a calorie deficit works. Supplements that you can buy in stores don't help with that in any way. If they would nobody would be overweight. There might be a few things that help, but those are hardly legal and probably not healthy.

Thus set a realistic weightloss goal that results in more than 1200 calories/day, eat those calories, log carefully and you will lose weight. If you feel what you normally eat doesn't make you full and happy then make small changes and go from there.

For weight loss? Directly, that's all about calories. Not supplements. Not nutrients.

Sub-par nutrition can have an indirect effect on weight loss: Get inadequate nutrition, energy tanks, move less/rest more in daily life, burn fewer calories. Get inadequate nutrition, body craves nutrients, appetite spikes, can't stick with lowered calories so don't lose weight. The direct effect is still via calories.

It's better to get nutrition from food, if at all possible, rather than from supplements. Supplements are for cases when something is lacking despite best e, ffort toward nutritious eating.

Many people will find so-called "whole foods" more filling than highly processed (refined) foods; as a bonus, they tend to be more nutrient dense. (I'm talking lean proteins, varied/colorful veggies and fruits, whole grains, less-processed dairy foods, etc.)

People have reportedly lost weight on party-trick diets, like eating masses of Twinkies or fast food or snacks from the convenience store. (I think some did use some supplements, though.) Typically, they did it to make the point that it's calories that matter for weight management.

Nutritionally - for health - none of those are a good idea. If all a person cares about is how skinny they get, eating mostly that stuff can work fine. In fact, if they can somehow fit in minimally adequate nutrition (probably possible on the fast food diet), health should be OK, too. Maybe not optimal - that's a bit of a cr*p shoot.

Eat food you like that adds up to reasonable nutrition at reasonable calories. Move in daily life more and sit less, maybe do some fun-to-you exercise if you have time. Find and practice reasonably easy, practical, pleasant new habits that let you accomplish those things almost on autopilot. IMO, that's how to lose weight, then stay at a healthy weight long term.

Context? That's about what I did around 8 years ago, after about 30 years prior to that being overweight/obese. I've been at a healthy weight for those 8 years since initial weight loss of around 30% of my body weight.

Think about how to make weight loss (weight management) easy (for you), rather than about how to make it fast. No "hacks". Focus on daily habits. The majority of our days deliver the majority of our results, not that one day when we eat too much cake, or work out for a stellar 6 hours. Habits are powerful.

    Best wishes!

By all means take supplements for nutrients you are low in. Low vitamins B-12 and D are common. Magnesium is often low in older(not just old) people. After all, we all want to be HEALTHY don't we? Health can have an effect on weight, just as weight has an effect on health.

As far as supplements just for weight loss, most of them make such little difference to most people that they'd probably be better off spending their money on higher quality food and time on a little more exercise. You may be the exception to the rule, but probably not.

Do you have any deficiencies? If not then the answer is likely: none. there are also some supplements that have negative (neurotoxic) effects if taken in a too high dosage. And others that can hide a deficiency if taken but that still don't fix the deficiency. And lots of unregulated stuff which has no proven effect.
