Please ask your doctor. Each person will have a different situation and everyone will give you a different answer

Diet as in lose weight or diet as in change what you eat?
If you are overweight, it's certainly worth trying to lose weight and see if that alone gets your cholesterol to a healthier level (it does for some).

As for changing what you eat, if that's what your doctor recommended: didn't they refer you to a dietician? It certainly can't hurt to increase vegetable and fruit intake and healthy fat intake (fatty fish, avocado, nuts,...). But without knowing how you eat currently and what your cholesterol issues are...

    In VERY GENERAL TERMS:

Eating saturated fats can increase serum cholesterol. Limit your intake of those if you're looking to reduce cholesterol. Also, if you drink coffee, don't use a French press. Using a paper filter removes the cafestol. There appears to be a link between cafestol and serum cholesterol.

High fiber foods are linked to lowering serum cholesterol. Eat more oats. Oily fish may also help.

For sure speak with your physician and see if they can get you a referral to a Registered Dietician (RD). Don't bother with someone who claims to be a "Nutritionist." Heck, I can make that claim, and you shouldn't trust me any more than the guy that sold Jack the magic beans.

    Beans have fiber....
