Looking into lifting

I've been doing research because I am considering adding lifting to my exercise routine.

I don't belong to a gym, but was looking into buying a few things for home. I was wondering if something like this is good as a starting point: http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/spo/4039585583.html

I've read on here about Olympic bars and I'm not sure if that's what this is, although I don't think it is based off of what I've seen. It doesn't need to be though, does it? I know standard Olympic bars are 44lbs. I'm guessing a regular barbell like this doesn't have nearly the weight of an Olympic bar?

I hope these questions aren't stupid. I've really just begun my research.

Thanks!

That's a good beginner's kit. A bit pricy, i think, but i could be wrong.
That's not an Olympic barbell, nor are they required.

You might also invest in resistance tubing. Bodylastics makes a good system.

That looks like it is a hollow tube bar, so maybe 5-10lbs in weight. It even looks like it is able to come apart in the middle, and likely couldn't handle much more than the 110lbs it comes with.

Which is not to say it is a bad set. Other than the barbell coming apart, I had a set like it in the basement when I was in my 20s.
Basically, good to start with, till you might feel like you need more later.

And an olympic bar would be solid, with the ends bigger than the part you hold. They can hold more than 500lbs.
