Newbie here

Hey guys, I've been a fitness junkie previously in my life. Age, illness, and atrophy have resulted in me being overwheight, out of shape, and weak. I know that I can get something back. I don't know what it will be or what it will look like, but I'm here to try!!

Yes, you can get fitness back. Patient, gradual progress is a good approach. A risk for those with an athletic past (now distant in the rear-view mirror) is trying to get back to previous fitness level very rapidly. Too often, that's a recipe for injury, discouragement or other setbacks.

Picking ways to be active that are fun (at least tolerable and practical) and a manageable challenge to current capabilities - that's a good route for almost anyone.

The challenge is what creates fitness progress, and "manageable" is what makes it possible to stay the course long enough to achieve meaningful total progress. As you get fitter, as what you're doing starts to feel easier - that'll be the time to increase frequency, duration, intensity or change type of exercise in order to keep the manageable challenge in the picture!

Speaking as someone who got routinely active (really for the first time in adulthood) in her mid-40s after cancer treatment when totally physically depleted and obese . . . I'm cheering for you to succeed! (I feel better and am more physically capable at 68 than I was at 45.)

    Best wishes!
