I don't see how I can sign up or comment in a challenge.

    The first post in a challenge generally will tell you how to sign up for that particular challenge, if you read carefully. If it doesn't say, one probably joins just by commenting on the thread, which can be done in the "Leave a Comment" box at the bottom.
