    If you get enough protein from food, a protein powder isn't necessary. If you can't get enough protein from food, protein powder is fine as a supplement. Whey protein is complete (in essential amino acids) and bioavailable, a good choice if you tolerate dairy. Whey protein isolate may be an option if you're lactose intolerant.
